Ways to Mitigate Parking & Revenue Loss

PARKING MITIGATION

There are a series of measures that may be undertaken to mitigate the loss of parking created by the Ferry Landside Improvement plan. In fact, some taken alone or together may actually INCREASE the total amount of parking spots downtown. The City recently contracted with DIXON to create a report on our downtown parking situation and sugest ideas on how to improve our parking availability and revenue generation opportunities. The Dixon study suggests that the City engage with these ideas, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, DPW, and the LPG, to create an executable plan to roll out some or all of these alternatives:

Mitigation #1: Employee Parking. Currently more than 100 parking passes are given to employees who park in Lots 3 & 4 at a cost of $6/day for the employee. In addition, some businesses pay for employee parking in lots 1 and 2. There are 80 FREE spots, available for 3 hours, in Lot 5. The proposal is to turn all or part of Lot 5 into free employee parking. This could create scores of additional spaces closer to downtown for customers, while saving employees money and decreasing the burden of employees driving into neighborhoods and competing with residents for parking

Stores maybe should require employees to park in employee parking

Mitigation #2: Restriping: After an idea proffered by Monica Finnegan from the nearby SCA, the City last week added four new parking spots to Downtown. These spots came from a restriping that did not change the size of any other spaces. That is 4 new spots downtown! Similar restriping in Lot 3 and 4 can add at least 13 new spots

Mitigation #3: Peak parking overflow. Busy weekends in Summer are also weekends when parking lot go empty on the north end of town. A shuttle between the areas can increase total parking availability to those who wish to come downtown

Mitigation #4: Valet Parking: Valet parking at PEAK TIMES only will increase the total number of people who are able to visit downtown. When lots are FULL, if Valet parking is available m those that wish to pay and visit will have an option to do so; without this option they will have to leave: a lose lose.

Mitigation #5: Parking in the Sausalito Yacht Harbor Lot: The Sausalito Yacht Harbor has a lot of spaces downtown. If an agreement can be reached with the Maddens then additional close in parking will be available. There is currently a LOI to use 38 spots in the Maddens lot – it’s being looked at right now by lawyers.
